Mental Health First Aid (February 2026)
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
Teaches participants how to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders, similar to how traditional first aid works for physical emergencies. The training provides a five-step action plan for approaching, assessing, and assisting individuals who may be developing a mental health challenge or experiencing a crisis. Key skills include non-judgmental listening, reassurance, and knowing how to refer individuals to professional support.
What the training covers
- Risk factors and warning signs: Learn to identify early warning signs of various mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders.
- Crisis and non-crisis situations: Develop strategies for supporting someone experiencing distress in both non-crisis and crisis situations, such as suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, or aggressive behavior.
- Local resources: Understand how to connect individuals with professional help and local resources.
- Action plan: Learn a step-by-step approach to approach, assess, reassure, and guide someone toward appropriate professional help.
